How To Install Vinyl Flooring In 4 Simple Steps
Installing vinyl floors can be done in just 4 simple steps.
- Prepare Your Subfloor
First, you’ll want to ensure that your subfloor is clean and levelled properly. Make sure that you remove any carpeting or old vinyl floor. If your subfloor is not level, you can use a self-levelling product to sand down the high spots.
- Measuring for Installation
To reduce the need for cutting your vinyl boards, try to install them on the wall parallel to the longest wall in the room. However, you might still need to do some cutting, which is why measuring is important.
First, take note of how you want to have your planks aligned. Then measure the width of the room which will be wall perpendicular to how you have your planks aligned. Make sure you take note of the measurement.
You also need to leave an allowance for a gap; hence, subtract between ½ to ¾ of an inch from your measurement. Take note of the value as well.
Now, to determine the number of rows, divide that value by the width of one of your planks. This will give you the number of full-width rows you’ll be installing in the room. But bear in mind that your last row will most likely be thinner than the rest of the rows.
But if your last row would be less than half of the normal width, you might want to consider trimming the first and last rows to give the flooring a more even look.
- Prepare your Doorways
You’ve gotten your vinyl floors in Wollongong, but of what use would they be if you install them but cand open your door?
To avoid this predicament, you’ll want to prepare your doorways. Take one of the vinyl planks and place them next to the door’s moulding. Then use a pencil to trace a guiding line to show you where to cut. Then use a saw to make the cut. Your door should be able to swing open and close more easily now.
- Install Your First Row
Unbox your planks and lay the first plank along your wall, leaving a proper expansion gap between the edge of the plank and your wall. Place the next plank next to the first by locking the groove edge into the first plank’s tongue edge. Continue like this with the rest of your rows.
You can stagger the vertical seams of your planks, leaving about six inches between the seams or adjacent rows. This would give your finish a more natural look.
Once you are done with all the rows, you’ll want to trim the border planks some more, if you want a proper expansion gap. You might want to replace the baseboard and moulding of the room and then use caulk to go over the seams of the moulding and baseboard. This would give your installation a finished look.
Conclusion
While vinyl floors can indeed be installed in just four easy steps, it is important that it is not enough to simply install the flooring but to do it properly.
